Western View of Women Should Be Reviewed, Says Former UK MP

LONDON Former British liberal democrat MP Jackie Ballard Monday called for a review of the way women are viewed in the West after paying a visit to Iran. "Perhaps it's time we looked again at our concept of freedom as I have my views about liberation, liberty and liberalism," she said, suggesting that women in the British Parliament would be taken more serious as professional politicians if they wore the chador. According to IRNA, Ballard, who lost her parliamentary seat at the last general election in June, said that her views about the dress code in the Islamic Republic "changed dramatically" after paying a few visits to Iran. "Iran might be geographically close to Iraq and Afghanistan, UT in other ways it could be a million miles away. It is a democracy, not governed by a mad dictator," she said in an article published in the ****Independent**** newspaper Monday. Questioning whether women have more freedom in Iran or Britain, Ballard asked both male and female liberal readers to "put aside your prejudices and misconceptions." Is it the "ones who can go about her life unmolested in public places" or "the one who is daily assaulted by images of half naked women," she asked.
